Our History

Don McCoy founded Rhinohide Canopies in 2013. He’s the real brains of the operation and the history of Rhinohide naturally is centered on him. In 2022, Don sold the company to Courtney and Christopher Scott (Courtney is known as the owner of Good Works Tractors).

While Rhinohide launched in 2013, Don had been designing and building mower and tractor canopies since 1986. In 1999 he fabricated an aluminum mold to produce a canopy from HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene), a plastic tough beyond its pedigree.

To make a long story short, the mold was a total failure. They just couldn’t get a good part unless they switched to ABS plastic. So he shelved the idea until 2013 when he decided to lay out some big bucks for a cast aluminum, thermally controlled, professionally formed mold.

Voila!—a nearly indestructible canopy shell that led to our namesake, Rhinohide. Not satisfied with the structural hardware he had been using for years, Don was able to re-design the current system to effectively handle any ROPS for compact tractors and mowers.

Toward the end of 2021, Don now in his 80’s was thinking hard about retirement. Courtney advertised for Don and Rhinohide, and Don offered him the first invitation to become the new owner. Courtney then offered his brother a 50/50 partnership and they sealed the deal.

So as of January 1, 2022 Courtney & Christopher own Rhinohide, and though they both reside in Michigan, all operations for Rhinohide continue to be based in Kansas.
