Our History

We’re Courtney & Christopher Scott. In 2022 we bought Rhinohide Canopies from Don McCoy, who originated the company in 2013. He’s the real brains of the operation and the history of Rhinohide naturally is centered on him.

Don launched Rhinohide Canopies in 2013, but had been designing and building mower and tractor canopies since 1986. In 1999 he fabricated an aluminum mold to produce a canopy from HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene), a plastic tough beyond its pedigree.

To make a long story short, the mold was a total failure. They just couldn’t get a good part unless they switched to ABS plastic. So he shelved the idea until 2013 when he decided to lay out some big bucks for a cast aluminum, thermally controlled, professionally formed mold.

Voila!—a nearly indestructible canopy shell. Not completely satisfied with the structural hardware he had been using for years, he was able to design the current system to effectively handle any ROPS for compact tractors and riding mowers. The new canopy is called Rhinohide and we have not replaced even one since launch.

Toward the end of 2021, Don now in his 80’s, was thinking hard about retirement. Up until that point, Courtney had been an affiliate advertiser for Rhinohide through Good Works Tractors. Don approached Courtney about buying the company, and Courtney in turn extended an offer to his brother Christopher to go in as 50/50 partners.

So as of January 1, 2022 Courtney & Christopher own Rhinohide, and though they reside in Michigan, all operations for Rhinohide continue to be based in Kansas.
