Rhinohide’s Origins

Don McCoy founded Rhinohide Canopies in 2013. He’s the real brains of the operation and the history of Rhinohide naturally is centered on him.

Don had been designing and building mower and tractor canopies since 1986. In 1999 he fabricated an aluminum mold to produce a canopy from HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene), a plastic tough beyond its pedigree.

Failure is never the end!

The mold was a total failure. They just couldn’t get a good part unless they switched to ABS plastic. So Don shelved the idea until 2013, when he decided to lay out some big bucks for a cast aluminum, thermally controlled, professionally formed mold.

Voila!—a nearly indestructible canopy shell that led to our namesake, Rhinohide. Not satisfied with the structural hardware he had been using for years, Don was able to re-design the current system to effectively handle any ROPS for compact tractors and mowers.

New Ownership

Toward the end of 2021, Don now in his 80’s was thinking hard about retirement. Courtney had been advertising for Don through his company, Good Works Tractors. Don offered him the first invitation to become the new owner. Courtney then generously offered his brother a 50/50 partnership, and a deal was struck.

So as of January 1, 2022 Courtney Scott & Chris Scott own Rhinohide. While they live in separate parts of the country, all operations for Rhinohide continue to be based in Kansas.

If you talk to anyone at Rhinohide, it will be Chris, as he handles the day-to-day operations for the company.
